Advent: a time to journey
Advent is a journey towards Jesus Christ: a journey to Bethlehem and Jesus' birth; also a journey towards Christ's 'second coming'.
IDEA! Time out on the journey: Amongst the Christmas shopping and office parties, why not treat yourself to some time out this year? Ten minutes each day, or an hour each week to find a quiet place on your own… to wonder about Christmas and what it means to you; what it may mean to people in different circumstances; and what the world might be like without Christmas?
Advent: a season of Light and Dark
Light and Dark are themes we explore during Advent. The candles on the Advent ring are lit week by week as we tell the stories of the Prophets of the Old Testament, of John the Baptist and of Mary the mother of Jesus.
IDEA! Light up Christmas: Holy Nativity needs to replace all the wiring and lighting in church. Could you 'lend a hand' to make the lights work? Why not bring a Christmas Gift with you to one of the Christmas Services? A contribution towards the cost of new lights? Donations can be Gift-Aided if you pay tax so that, for every £1 you give, the church can claim an extra 28p from the Inland Revenue. Gift envelopes are available in church.
Next Christmas, the new lights will be blessed at a Carol Service.
IDEA! Present Aid: gifts which help you say thank you to someone special by making a difference for someone in need. For example, for a football fan why not buy a football for a youth team in Rwanda? There are lots more ideas from Christian Aid at PresentAid.org.
IDEA! Christmas Cards: send cards with a Christmas message. Holy Nativity has cards for sale to support the 'Outside In' Community Project.
